Summertime!
Summer Romero Wins 2004 Toes on the Nose Women's World Longboard Championship Title
by Lindsay Tredent

It was an eventful Halloween weekend for Summer Romero, as she was crowned the 2004 Women's World Longboard champion Sunday afternoon. Romero offered an impressive performance in Huntington Beach, California, at the Toes on the Nose Women's World Longboard Championship presented by Coors Light.

This title was not an easy one to lock down; with stiff competition throughout the weekend, it was tough to say who would take home the win. When you see women like Kassia Meador, Jen Smith, Marissa Barry, and Ashley Lloyd getting knocked out in the quarterfinals, this only shows the high caliber of this competition and how prominent this win is to whomever achieves it.

Romero, who won the longboard event at the Hello Kitty Boardfest earlier in October, said the previous event helped her to prepare for this weekend's championship. "This wave [at Huntington] is very shifty, and the Hello Kitty Boardfest allowed me to practice and get used to it," she explained.

With her smooth control and smart wave knowledge, Romero won every heat up through her final, pulling big floaters and powerful snaps. "I wanted to stick to the one left that's been good and try to take it all the way into the beach for a noseride," said the San Diego local of her strategy. "I try not to think about things too much, because then nerves get to you."
