Saturday, July 23: Quarter Finals

Surf: “It wasn’t the best conditions, but some waves were pretty fun,” Courtney Conlouge said while running out of the water after winning her heat. Huntington Beach hosted 2-3 ft - knee to waist high with occasional 4 ft. waves. But as the tide went out, taking the swell with it, conditions became hard and funky. The wind picked up later in the afternoon and the girls did their best riding mostly blown-out surf.

Nature’s Call: Spectators didn’t seem to care about the wind and slightly overcast weather. Sporting their bathing suits, they lathered on sunscreen and watched the competitions from their beach towels. Enjoying the sun and surf, about a dozen of Courtney Conlouge’s friends and family were spotted cheering her on from their beach chairs.

Performer of the Day: Her aggressive surfing and sick cutbacks definitely earned Karina Patroni Performer Of The Day. The Florida native dominated her heat catching most of the solid waves and powering through them with mastered snaps and off-the-lips. She was psyched that the US Open of Surfing is hosting a Junior Women’s division this year. “I think it’s the best thing they can do,” she says with enthusiasm. “There’s a lot of youth talent in surfing and now we get a chance to show it off.”

Heat of the Day: A stacked heat of some of the best junior women’s competitors around—Carissa Moore, Courtney Conlouge, Erica Hosseini, and Ashley Bobb—made for the most exciting heat of the day. Erica Hosseini caught a nice outsider left, and after a few snaps and off-the-lips before she shot right through the Huntington Beach Pier! The spectators from the beach were amazed that she made it through successfully and cheered her on while she paddled back. The strong current made it difficult for her to get back in the lineup and the other girls stole some nice waves while she was gone. Carrisa took the lead halfway through. However, with only 2 ˝ minutes remaining, Courtney took a wave all the way to the beach, riding it smoothly and gracefully as she glided through her turns and stellar cutbacks, moving her into the first place position. “I was pretty nervous at first because I was against Erica and Carissa,” says Courtney. “But after winning my heat I feel pretty confident going into tomorrow’s semi-finals.”

Sunday, July 24: Semi Finals
Surf: The girls had the first heat of the morning. Instead of a glassy ocean surface, the ass crack of dawn saw morning sickness and lots of current. The low tide, and wishy-washy conditions caused a lot of closeouts didn’t leave the girls much to work with. Although the water temp was a nice 70 degrees, the cool wind forced them to bundle up in their hoodies, blankets and beanies after getting out of the water.

Nature’s Call: Shake it like a Polaroid picture…while watching Coco Ho compete, Ho’s father, former World Champ Michael Ho and Carissa Moore were dancing on the beach. With Coco advancing to the finals, she became one of the four girls to win a shopping spree at Target.

Results:
Heat #1 saw a double face-off between the USA and Hawaii. Christa Alves and Karina Petroni split the first peak, but the Hawaiians weren’t about to let the mainland girls take over; Katherine VanDyke and Coco Ho fought back, but it was both Hawaii and the mainland that came out victorious as Karina and Coco advanced to the finals. Lots of love was in the air when Carissa Moore ran up to Coco after the heat and gave her a big hug…awwww.

Erica Hosseini dominated Semi #2, putting it all together with two great waves. She stayed patient during the 20-minute heat, focusing on her wave selection. While Courtney was trying to paddle back out, Erica, Leilani, and Nikita took advantage of what waves were left. Nikita Robb advanced to the finals. However, Erica slammed the competition scoring a 16.00, tying Karina Petroni with the “best wave” title in the semi-finals.

Heat #1
1- Karina Petroni – 13.83
2- Coco Ho – 9.50
3- Katherine VanDyke – 7.20
4- Christa Alves – 5.54

Heat #2
1- Erica Hosseini – 16.00
2- Nikita Robb –7.50
3- Courtney Conlouge – 7.43
4- Leilani Gryde – 5.63

What’s to come: The girls don’t compete again till next weekend. So until then they have all week to enjoy everything that California has to offer: beautiful beaches, great surf, lively people and of course the happiest place on earth, Disneyland!

Who’s in the Finals:
1- Karina Petroni
2- Coco Ho
3- Erica Hosseini
4- Nikita Robb
