SURF
Hello Kitty Boardfest, Day 3

Mel Bartels battles the storm at the Huntington Pier.

In addition to the finals, there was also some explosive surfing going on up through the semifinals. Courtney Conlogue, of Santa Ana, California, received much attention and applause on the beach. Barely 12 years old and surfing against the big girls, Conlogue made it all the way to the semis of a four-star WQS event. "I was just happy to surf with a lot of my idols," Conlogue said. "This event is just practice for me. I am just practicing so that when I get older I will be a real good pro surfer."

Next up for the WQS ladies is the O'Neill Cold Water Classic, which begins Tuesday in Santa Cruz, California. As for Bevilacqua, her win this weekend is a boost of confidence for the upcoming contest. "I'm just totally stoked to win an event," Bevo shared. "I've been waiting a long time for this."

Results 1. Claire Bevilacqua (AUS), 9.85, $3,500
2. Melanie Bartels (HAW), 8.80, $2,200
3. Karina Petroni (USA), 8.30, $1,800
4. Rebecca Woods (AUS), 7.35, $1,300
