PLAYING THE WILDCARD
By Danielle Rivet
Nineteen year-old current French Junior champion Caroline Sarran from Anglet, France is a rising star. She holds bragging rights to eliminating six-time world title-holder Layne Beachley in the Roxy Fiji Pro in 2004, and is one of a handful of girls who are the new crew of young up-and-coming WCT world title hopefuls. She’s made it to every WCT trials final she’s ever competed in, and has made it through to the main event in all but one (her most recent: the 2005 Roxy Gold Coast Pro).
In 2004, “Frenchy,” as her crew likes to call her, finished 24th on the WQS after only competing in nine events and not only won all three WCT trials events she entered, but also took down Jacqueline Silva of Brazil at the Roxy Pro, Fiji and then knocked out longtime pro and ratings leader Rachelle Ballard on her home turf at the Roxy Pro in Anglet, France placing 5th overall in the event. With a little more cash in her pocket and some proud sponsors, Evian, Jeep, Roxy and Slide, Sarran wrapped up her season on the North Shore where got knocked out in her first heat of the main event. With more experience under her belt, Caro will be one to watch out for as she plays her cards again next season.
Q: Have you ever beaten a boy in competition?
A: Yes, in Europe not many girls surf, so I had to compete with the guys.
Q: What has your experience been like surfing on the WCT?
A: It has been really fun; I get to travel to places like Tahiti and Fiji.
Q: Do you get nervous when you have to surf against top pros like Rachelle Ballard, or Layne Beachley?
A: Not anymore than any other girl I am surfing with. I just focus on surfing and not on who I am surfing against.
Q: What are your plans for the 2005 season?
A: In January I want to start training to qualify for the 2006 WCT. I will be surfing of course and also, Roxy has set me up with a personal trainer that has me on a fitness program that includes running, swimming, and stretching. This will help me to be fit and have a good head for the WQS tour. Also, I want to eat healthy. I love French food. Especially Duck.
