Speakeasy - January 2005
January 2005
In your hands is a preview of some big changes that are about to happen to this magazine. I realize you’ve been told this before, and that those of you who are longtime readers may even be a little frustrated with all the “changes” that have taken place since you first signed on. I completely understand. But hear me out—we’ve got a pretty good case for this one.
First off, hi there. My name’s Melissa, and I’m the new captain of this ship. Since it’s a “multi-sport” vessel, I want to be upfront about something: I am a snowboarder. I hope that doesn’t bum you out, but just in case, I’ll tell you why it shouldn’t.
When I say I’m a snowboarder, I mean it’s the one factor that has defined my life since I was 15. Because of snowboarding, I’ve lived in more closets than bedrooms, dropped out of school twice, become an expert at sleeping on floors, in cars, and through the middle of complete chaos, and am way too familiar with the various forms of employment available in the food-service industry.
I’ve also ridden between 30 and 100-plus days a year for more than 12 years, and regret not one sacrifice that’s been made to do it. This addiction has gotten my broke ass around the world, opened my eyes to things I never would have seen otherwise, and introduced me to countless amazing people along the way.
I know firsthand what it’s like to live and breathe the sport that you love. In fact, at the end of the day, it may be all I know. So while you may call it surfing, and I may call it snowboarding, and she may call it skateboarding—we all call it passion. This passion is what makes us who we are. It’s also what’s going to guide this magazine through uncharted waters to a New World that’s waiting for us just beyond the stretches of our imaginations.
