Dick's Ditch Takes No Prisoners

Dick's Ditch, a daunting banked slalom combining Jackson Hole, Wyoming's gnarly natural terrain with creative manmade features, came back to taunt riders February 22, 2004. The park and pipe crew put on their "imagineering goggles" to build what many racers called "the smoothest, fastest, and most fun course ever." A custom belt buckle (reminiscent of downtown's Cowboy Bar) and seven bills were the bounty for those who finished in one piece first -- an achievement in itself on a course that gobbles up and spits out pros right and left. This year was no different, as a step-up straight into a sharp banked turn, a set of rollers nicknamed the "mousetrap," and the infamous Terje Kicker took down favorites in every category.
Locals and the young were left to duke it out on the ladies' pro snowboard front, as few out-of-towners made the trip to remote Jackson and some old-school pros took the year off. The ladies' number-one pro spot was snatched up by 15-year-old local Emma Rahme, who was named a week earlier as the youngest member on the World Cup Boarder X team. Coming in a close second to Victoria Jealouse last year, Rahme returned with a level of confidence and relaxed riding style beyond her years, beaming on and off the course. Pro snowboarder and X Games pipe skier Jamie Sundberg, looked strong heading into the mousetrap, yet she was tossed off course, opening snowboard seconds to Midge Greene, a Jackson snowboard instructor.
