Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding, Stop 2, Day 2
Women's Slopestyle Finals
Mammoth Mountain, CA
by Melissa Buckley
The wind responsible for blowing in a few flurries Friday night finally gave it a rest this morning. Gray skies parted for bluebird conditions, and the sun softened the snow enough to melt the icefield.
Janna Meyen was so confident in her first run, complete with two huge 540s and and a sick tailslide on the rail, that she didn't even bother to take her second. Apparently she didn't need to -- Meyen unnofficially grabbed a first-place finish anyway.
Tara Dakides, who also stomped a solid score her on first coast through the course, couldn't afford to be quite so cocky. But after butt-sliding a box at the top of the slope and giving the cameraman she blamed for the fall a double bird-flipping, she ended up riding the side of the course and forfeiting her second run. Luckily, Tara's first score still secured her the third-place spot.
Jessica Dalpiaz charged for second. Other riders who stepped it up today were Jaime Anderson, who hucked a huge backflip off the first kicker; Kelly Clark, with two solid runs; and Cheryl Maas, whose second stylie stab at the course put her in fifth.
Halfpipe finals and the rail jam will proceed on Sunday. Check back here for those results, as well as a more complete, offical look at Saturday's events.
