Triple Crown of Skate Kicks Off in Vancouver
May 12, 2003
by Kim Stravers
Held at the Pacific Coliseum, an estimated 15,000 guys and gals filled up the stands as the contest gained momentum. Cara-Beth Burnside certainly made an entrance at this year's contest--though she's never competed at Slam before, she managed to absolutely destroy the vert ramp and take not only first place, but also SG's Best Trick prize purse. CB floated frontside airs over the channel and stuck some wicked invert handplants--always a crowd favorite. She walked away a queen of skate, $500 richer for her Les Twist (tailgrab 360 with a backside grab) on Tony Hawk's insane Boom Boom Huck Jam ramp.
SG crowned two new queens at Vancouver's famous and longstanding Slam City Jam, May 3-4, 2003. The renowned skateboarding event, which serves as the first stop on the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding tour, celebrated its 10th year with special performances by Bad Religion, The Coup, and Talib Kweli, a Legends Bowl Jam at the Hastings Skatepark next door, and a Tony Hawk Foundation Demo.

Down on the massive street course, Vanessa Torres again swept the women's field, nailing a beauty frontside Smith grind in the midst of some banger f/s 5-0s. But it was Amy Caron, street champ in 2002, who feeble grinded her way to earning SG's Best Trick Street $500 crown. Check out the Oct./Nov. 2003 issue of SG for full-force coverage of all the girls' notable street feats.
