Showcase Showdown
By: Joy Rios

More than 10,000 fans showed up to Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, February 15-16, 2003, for the Globe World Cup of Skateboarding and the Gallaz Skate Jam 5. They were witness to some of the best skating in the world, where 100-plus professional and amateur skateboarders from all over the globe came to compete in street and vert for a chance at more than $20,000 in prize money.

Virginia Maddock

The Gallaz Skate Jam 5 is considered the largest women-only skate forum, and offers the biggest prize purse in women's skateboarding history: more than $4,000. Girls such as Vanessa Torres, Elissa Steamer, Jaime Reyes, and Lyn-Z Adams-Hawkins got to show their skills on the largest street course of its kind, with three main sections featuring a tiled bowl, numerous rails, barricades, and a 13-foot wall to launch. Memorable moves included Lauren Perkins's ollie launch over the barricade, Vanessa Torres's ability to rulethe pool and nollie kickflip to 50-50 on the table, and Jaime Reyes's ability to skate into third place with a broken wrist. It was possibly the best showcase of women's skateboarding ever. And it's only going to get better.

Official Results of the Gallaz Skate Jam 5

2. Elissa Steamer (USA)
