Once the eight riders were chosen, the girls were given one 45-second judged run, and then all got a chance to jam for 10 minutes, during which time they were really able to shine. Fourteen-year-old Perkins consistently ollied just about everything on the course, as well as throwing solid kickflips and transfers. Elissa Steamer did a line that included a kickflip down the double-set followed by a nollie down the nine-stair. Kenna Gallagher was throwing 360 flips into the big bank, and Jessica Krause boardslid a giant rail. But Vanessa Torres was the real star with a bag of tricks that included a crooked grind on the flatbar, 50-50 down the big ledge, backside disaster on the quarterpipe, and of course, the aforementioned backside lipslide.

But for Torres, Slam is more than just a chance to showcase her skateboarding. "Everybody comes out here...for the same things," she says. "We all get to party and hang out, and I get to see a lot of the girls I don't get to see all the time. It's a good little reunion." As for her skating, she explained, "I didn't really have my run planned -- I just kind of did it."
