Meet and Greet: Skater Caylen Dakin
October 28, 2003
Interview courtesy of Nikita

Age: 21
Hometown: Truckee, California

What inspired you to start skating?
Last summer I couldn't go to summer camp in [Mt.] Hood, [Oregon] so I was working full-time at the resort at Squaw Creek [California]. I worked with a girl named Lindsay, who skates. Every day she would hound me to start skating, so I got a skateboard and started rolling around the Truckee skatepark. I picked up the idea relatively quickly and fell in love with the thrill and adrenaline rush that I got from skateboarding. Because of this, I skated every day for several hours, always pushing myself harder and harder. One year later, nothing has changed. I just love it.

Favorite trick?
There is nothing better than the feel of pool coping underneath my trucks.

Favorite spot?
Mark's pool.

How much do you think your skills on the mountain influence your skills when you skate?
I would have to say that my skills skating have influenced my skills on the mountain much more than vice-versa. It's hard to say how much snowboarding has influenced my skateboarding, because skating is much more difficult. I think that the transition from skateboarding to snowboarding is an easier one to make. If anything, my snowboarding style has transferred to my skating.

Which do you enjoy more?
That's hard to say. I love the rush of both of the sports, and they really are two different worlds altogether.

What motivates you?
My biggest motivation is just the thrill of the chase. I have a list of tricks that I want to learn, and every time I skate or snowboard I envision a new trick or two that I want to learn. If I don't get the trick the first day I try it, I just get hungrier the next day until I finally get it. Because of this, the long-anticipated tricks are the ones with the biggest reward.

What do you do when you're not skating?
I go to school full-time at UNR [the University of Nevada, Reno]. I am currently in my last year and will have my bachelor's degree in education in May 2004. This takes up a lot of my time, but it seems as though a college education is important these days, and I got a full-ride scholarship for all four years. Other than that, I enjoy listening to music, making beanies, and playing with my friends.

Name five things that make life good.
1. My family and friends
2. The fine arts (art, music, etc.)
3. Eminem
4. New terrain to skate/snowboard
5. Double-you double-ee dee

Word up.
First and foremost, I want to thank my mom, who is the most beautiful girl in the world . My brother, Asa; he is one of my biggest influences. I would also like to thank my papa, my grammy, Jessie Cohen and the rest at Nikita, Ryan Baker, Vince and Scotty from Vans, RV, Jimbo and the Electric boys, Colin and Dave at Zoo York, Ed from Ollie Pop, Todd-Dogg, Erica B., Sarah M., Lindsay N., Briggs, Sean, Gershon, Haggin, Mark, Rick, Dane and Trevor and everyone else who has supported me along the way.
