Inspired by her fellow riders and disenchanted by the lack of female representation in snowboard videos, Whistler, British Columbia-based snowboarder and filmmaker Lauren Graham decided this year to shed some light on the subject.
Shot in the Dark, an all-girls snowboarding film shot in locations including Whistler, Vancouver, Mammoth, and Japan, made its debut at the Action Sports Retailer (ASR) trade show in San Diego, California, on Saturday, September 5.
Graham wanted to do something with all of the footage out there that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, but merits a forum nonetheless. "It's awesome and a huge honor for a girl to get a couple of shots in a guy's video, but something needed to be done with all of that film ending up on the cutting-room floor," explains Graham. What she did was just that. What the video lacks in awe-inspiring sessions, it makes up for in artistic merit and cinematography. The cleverly crafted cameos and 8mm quips laced throughout the project make it visually enjoyable.
Leanne Pelosi opens the video with a solid air over a waterfall gap, riders Priscilla Levac and Alisa Mokler do some major rail time, and Victoria Jealouse's signature big mountain style shines. Susi Davis wraps the film nicely with her repertoire of 50-50s but it's Jamie Mcleod's style-oozing part, complete with a huge 360 tailgrab, that takes the spotlight.
As for its reception thus far, "I've had boys say they'd watch it twice, which is pretty damn cool," says Graham. Look for Flow to sponsor both an American and Canadian premier tour in the near future.
