Dieselboy
Words with the Dungeonmaster himself
by Melissa Larsen
The spell is cast...
Dieselboy's new record, The Dungeonmaster's Guide, is actually the name of the first Dungeons and Dragons book I bought when I was a kid. It's kind of like a shout-out to all the people out there who dig role-playing games. And it's a way for me to say, "You know what? I'm proud of the fact that I was a part of that whole subculture. Because I think most of them are pretty intelligent and creative people."
For those familiar with drum ‘n' bass, Dieselboy is a man who needs no introduction. Widely considered one of the most influential American drum ‘n' bass DJs around, Dieselboy has been consistently pushing the boundaries of drum ‘n' bass production for more years than most people in this country have been familiar with the genre. And it's earned him the respect of countless fans worldwide in the process.
Blurring the lines between the eight zillion subcategories that exist in the genre of electronic music, this latest double-disc CD -- his eighth release in a career that has spanned as many years -- features remixes of songs by well-known techno, trance, and house musicians by some of today's top drum ‘n' bass producers. And it's insane. You don't have to take my word for it, though -- just do a Google search. You won't be able to find one negative review out there, I swear. But here's the kicker: The album had barely shipped to stores, and already Dieselboy was thinking forward to his next project, to the next progression of drum ‘n' bass.
