Scandinavian Sensation: J.P. Solberg
The Burton Global Team's World Tour stopped in L.A. this week, and we persuaded Scandinavian hot stuff J.P. Solberg to stop by our offices for a few to catch us up on his whirlwind snowboard career. Enjoy.
-- K.S. SG: How did you spend your summer this year?
J.P. I was snowboarding 'til the end of June this year, filming with Mack Dawg, and on the last day of the shoot I took a pretty bad bail and dislocated my shoulder. So I had nothing really to do except chill and hang out in Norway all summer.
What kinds of things are you doing to get yourself in shape for the 2003/2004 season?
That's a good question, 'cause over the years I'm getting less time to in shape. Right now I'm on the Burton World Tour, which started September 15, and I won't be done 'til November 6. So this year sleep is gonna be my base.
Where's the first place you want to ride this winter?
I want to ride at home [in Norway] for a little bit with my little brother and not really worry about anything. My season usually gets pretty hectic, so just spending time at home is a big deal to me.
Got any big plans for your sled this season?
I hate sleds -- the less I have to sled, the better I'll be off. I wrecked two brand-new sleds this year. I forgot to put oil in my sled, so it faked up. While it was at the repair shop getting fixed, I borrowed Heikki's [Sorsa] sled for one day and I crashed it going 60mph... And I just talked to my filmer, who's taking care of my sled in Squamish [British Columbia] (up by Whistler), and I guess my sled's underwater right now because of the flood. Pretty bummed on sleds.
With all the crazy rain that's been happening near Whistler recently, what do you think the winter is going to be like up there?
Good I hope -- seems like every year we're having a bad season, but if it snows like it's been raining right now we're gonna have a really good season.
