Six Organs of Admittance, "School of the Flower"
Drag City Records
by Michelle Pullman
In 1997, Ben Chasny (also of Comets on Fire) began Six Organs of Admittance in Northern California with a four-track recording device and a rotating cast of friends. Eight years and handfuls of releases later, we are given School of the Flower, an album thick with memories, forgiveness, and moving on.
It begins with an intro, "Eighth Cognition," consisting of free-jazz drumming and feedback followed by an incredibly comforting acoustic guitar and Chasny’s soft, soothing vocals. The first song, "All You’ve Left," invites you calmly to let go of your past. "Bring yourself down to the stream / wash away what’s old / don’t go down to where you were / find everything’s been sold…Take yourself away from here / tell it down where you been / all you’ve left / all you’ve loved / all you’ll never be..."
Track three, "Saint Cloud," has Chasny chanting shamanistically along with tabla drums, feedback, Eastern-tinged acoustic guitar, and chimes. It feels like the softest, longest-lasting not-sad hug you have ever been a part of. This music offers comfort and contentment. It makes the ghosts good, the past golden, and the future last forever.
