Ramones, "Ramones Raw"
The Ramones/image Entertainment
by J. Mendoza
Let’s start out with what this DVD isn’t: It isn’t a documentary, and it isn’t a concert film either. So don’t be expecting a retrospective on the band or a full live set. This DVD is a tour video. "What the hell does that mean?" you may ask. Well, it means it’s a video that has a lot of behind-the-scenes and backstage footage intermingling with live performances, T.V. interviews, and various other visual gems. Now, I consider the Ramones to be the GREATEST AMERICAN BAND EVER. They never, ever got the respect they were due here in the U.S., which is why I was happy to see that they got that love abroad. Everywhere they went in Europe, Japan, and South America, they were mobbed like The Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night. (Uh, ask someone over 30.)
Despite the public arguing the Ramones are notorious for, you’ll see none of it here. It’s just them being overgrown kids: goofing off and having a good time. The extras include deleted scenes, commentary with Johnny and Marky, a full-length live concert originally aired on European T.V. in 1980, and a load of hidden features. This DVD is precious because it’s the only way anyone will ever get to see the very human side of Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee (R.I.P. all). My only two gripes are that it’s presented in standard format, not widescreen, and it’s in regular stereo, not 5.1 surround, but hey... If you’re a Ramones fan, get this film. And if you’re not a Ramones fan, what’s your problem?
