NoFX, "The Greatest Songs Ever Written (By Us)"
Epitaph
by Larry Harmon

After surviving nicely for 20-plus years of punk rock, NoFX compiled for this greatest-hits package what they think are their best tunes from 1983 to 2004. Like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Jon Stewart, these tattooed satirists are best when they’re poking fun at something -- which ranges from vegetarians to Republicans to themselves -- and they do it with wit sharp enough to cut their tongues on.

One thing's for certain: NoFX has not mellowed with age. Although they occasionally slow things down with a reggae riff or trumpet intro, the music still charges just has hard as their earlier recordings on this 27-track release. Along with staying true to their original sound, they’re still waving the anti-authority flag with political songs such as “The Idiots Are Taking Over” and “Franco Un-American.” But then again, this is the band that organized an entire tour called “Rock Against Bush” prior to the November elections.

But where NoFX really shows off their skills is when they’re pointing the finger directly at themselves and their baggy-shorted fans. Songs like “The Separation of Church and Skate” tear into today’s sanitized scene, while on “Wore Out the Soles of My Party Shoes” (the only unreleased track on the release) the band mocks themselves as geriatric punkers pushing 40.

But it doesn’t matter how old these guys are. They’re misbehaving and causing more problems than any band half their age.
