The Hives, "Tyrannosaurus Hives"
Interscope Records
by Larry Harmon

With the release of their third album, Tyrannosaurus Hives, Sweden’s rock darlings have hit their stride. The band continues to streamline their garage-punk sound into an ultra-tight beat that rips from opener "Abra Cadaver" to the last track, "Antidote." The band does take a breather on a couple of songs, getting a bit bluesy on "Diabolic Scheme" or the dry "A Little More for Little You," but accusing The Hives of slowing down would be like taking your foot off the accelerator just long enough to slow down from 95 to 75 mph. Of course the amazing star quality of frontman Howlin’ Pete Almqvist gives the band the visual element (the sharp matching suits help, too) that makes The Hives true rock’n’roll contenders in a scene flooded with fly-by-night hipsters.
