“Groms: Volume One,” DVD Review
by Lindsay Tredent
"No way! That kid just busted a backside 900!"
"Are you kidding me? She’s only 14 years old?"
"Oh, man -- he’s gonna be a little heartbreaker when he grows up."
These are all phrases you might find yourself saying as you watch the Groms: Volume One DVD, put out by Groms TV. The film defines a grommet as someone younger than 18 who competes in skateboarding, surfing, or snowboarding. Most of these kids have been doing these sports almost since they could walk. Combine that with natural talent, and you’ve got a new revolution of riders. This new generation is especially visible in the world of snowboarding, where parents are no longer making their kids learn to ski first, but starting them off straight on a snowboard.
This DVD showcases some of the hottest groms in the world, sprouting from areas such as Manhattan Beach, Cardiff, and Mammoth Mountain, California; Vermont; Puerto Rico; and Sweden. You’ll recognize at least a few of the athletes in this hour-long, heavy hitting video: Hawaiian charger John John Florence, USA Surf Team member Courtney Conlogue, Riley Hawk, Hannah Teter, and Lyn-Z Adam Hawkins. Other standouts are 13-year-old skateboarder Lacey Baker, and snowboarders Tyler Flanagan, Keagan Vaalika, Luke Mitrani, and Mikkel Bang.
