Dry Kill Logic, "The Dead and Dreaming"
Psychodrama Records
by Michelle Pullman
From the depths of a dark world, Dry Kill Logic bludgeons listeners with a surprising fusion of hardcore, heavy metal, and modern rock on their fourth album, The Dead and Dreaming. Dangerously aggressive with ripping guitars, pummeling percussion, and angry monster vocals, this album unearths serious psychological pain in a very heavy manner similar to Slayer, System of a Down, and Pantera. Brief respite comes with an added twist of indie rock in Dry Kill Logic’s unveiled emotional lyrics and the occasional melodic guitar.
Although the material is relentlessly angry, there are moments of mercy in many of the choruses when the deep, steady scream turns to vulnerable singing with lyrics of disappointing love and self-betrayal, as in “Paper Tiger”: “Yet I feel alive / for all the pain I have / and all you do is seem to remind me / of all the times and the ways I would have died for you”.
In its anger, experiencing The Dead and Dreaming offers retribution for all without suffering from acting on your own frustrations. All the revenge in your heart will be taken care of in one listen, whether you choose to scream along with hate, bang your head in righteous agreement, or sit in a corner and cry for all you’ve endured.
