De La Soul, "The Grind Date"
Sanctuary Urban
by Erica "eko" Olsen
One of the most trustworthy names in hip -- hop, De La Soul never fails to deliver solid albums. Their strong card is consistency. Where some hip -- hop albums feature tracks that are expressly created to aim at commercial radio play, De La moves independent from gimmicky tactics to appeal to the masses, and never compromises.
De La has triple ability in recognizing the best new talent, self -- confidence to collaborate successfully, and access to work with anyone they choose. Impeccable beats were selected from a group of the brightest new cats on the scene, in addition to the dependable sonic chemistry of Supa Dave West. Hands down, Posdanus (aka Plug -- One) is an extremely underrated emcee. If you pay attention, you’ll catch some really smart commentary: "Instead of giving you a chef / serving you a dish / I’ll lead you to the water / show you how to fish/Ain’t nothing wrong with making that bread, with it / Just don’t let the bread get to your head, get it"on a soul -- clapping "Church"produced by 9th Wonder. A shining track like "Much More,"featuring sugary vocalist Yummy and produced by Jdilla, appeals equally to b -- boys and b -- girls, assuring a continued loyal following. In addition to good cameos by Common, MF Doom, and Ghostface, and production by Madlib, De La has it all this time around.
