AV
Various artists, "A Place Called Hawaii: Volume 3"
Hanaola Records
by Erica "eko" Olsen

This is a CD you may want to give to your parents -- if they like to visit the islands regularly. Touted as "Hawaii’s Greatest Artists," the musicians contributing here may be the more well-known of Hawaiian artists, but this may not be the music you’re reminiscing about from your surf trip. Just having returned from Maui and listening to KPOA’s "Island Grooves" radio 93.5 every time I stepped foot in the car, I hoped that this award-winning compilation would cover both the traditional and the contemporary sounds coming from the west, including Hawaiian reggae and ukulele instrumentals -- more surf-style music. Instead, this selection has a large quotient of soft rock geared toward older folks, with many wistful Muzak tunes about the hills of Waimanalo. Think 1950s and The Beach Boys’ slow tunes. You may be better off tuning into the island stations via the web to get your fix. (Hint: Check out www.internetradioindex.com/i-probe/ip_radio_us_hawaii.html.)
